Poem: When did you lose your innocence

When did you lose your innocence – spoken word
When did you lose your innocence?
Was it the day you stopped asking questions?

When life threw you
some unexpected turns
chew you down
and spat you out.

Was it the day you stopped climbing
into your mother's bed?
after a bad dream
or the day
you stopped believing
in ghosts and goblins.

Was it the day you stopped caring?
Or the day you gave up,
ceased asking questions

When did you lose your innocence?
Was it the day you paid your first bill?
Then declared with frustration,
‘adulting is a scam’.
Or the day you realised
you are more like your parents
than you'd like to admit.

When exactly did you lose your innocence?
Or is it still there
lurking in the gust of a nearby wind,
waiting to cling to your future offspring,
and start the cycle all over again.
