Book review: The Marriage Monitoring Aunties Association by Ola Awonubi

Marriage monitoring aunties association by Ola Awonubi book review

I picked up this book while I was in the early throes of my postpartum recovery. It was a welcome escape, especially in the middle of the night when I was wide awake after my many breastfeeding adventures. I enjoyed getting lost in this good story and will always look back at this time with fond memories. In those quiet hours before my baby woke up, I had little time to myself, and reading this book felt like a gift I could give myself.

What is the Marriage Monitoring Aunties Association about?

Sade Sodipo is in her fifties and single. She remains hopeful for the miracle of meeting the one. Her mother, two best friends and younger sister are also hoping that she will meet the one soon.

Sade may have a thriving job and own her own home, but according to her meddling aunties, these are the things scaring off Mr Right! As Sade goes about her life, these annoying aunties single her out at engagement ceremonies to embarrass her about not being married.

We follow Sade as she explores her emotions and thoughts about being single at this stage in her life. We also go along with her on her journey to falling in love, along with all the hopes and possibilities it could bring.

What I enjoyed about this book?

I loved that this was a later-in-life Christian romance. The main character has a very realistic storyline, which is very refreshing to read.

Although it is a romance-based story with light comedy, there is a rawness and real-life practicality about the main character, Sade, who remains hopeful about meeting the one.

As Sade, the protagonist, is a real classic church girl, I loved the references to issues older unmarried women feel at single conferences.

I enjoyed that this was a clean romance story and still wholesome.

What I didn’t like

I found the ending came upon me suddenly. I wish there was an epilogue to go into a snippet of life after the happy ever after.

What review would I give this book?

I give this book 4 and a half stars because it was a very unique story that was told from a perspective that is not usually shared. The key message it shared was that it is never too late for love.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
