Poem: The Changing

Poem: The Changing – Audio
A conceited teenager,
the centre of attention.
Mirror pouts. Instagram selfies

The changes were gradual,
unnoticeable at first.

A nervous breakdown in class.
Concerned friends.

Her hurting heart,
soothed by inspirational quotes,
replacing Instagram selfies.

Hushed whispers behind textbooks.

Midnight prayers.
Teary letters to God.
Late nights, early mornings.

Years later,
You pass by her in the supermarket.
She’ll break into a smile,
but you wouldn't recognise her,
as the once conceited teenager.

  1. This is apt 👌👌👌, Ibukun.

Most teenagers want attention only to end up in beautiful detention.

But in the place of deeper connection with God, they find real validation, solace and authentic allure.

  2. I like how your poem tells a story. It’s like telling a story with the bare minimum of words. I also like the words you chose still give some space for the reader to imagine what it’s all about, whilst giving the right amount of clues. I like poems that conjure up pictures, like quick scenes in my head, that’s definitely what this poem does. 🙂
